Decimal Coins

There’s been well over eleven billion decimal coins produced in Australia since 1966 – statistics from the Reserve Bank of Australia show that the number of coins still in circulation right now is enough for each and every man, woman and child in Australia to have at least 550 coins each!

The fact that there are still so many around means there are only three decimal coins regularly worth more than their face value if they’re not in absolutely perfect condition. There are heaps of Australian decimal coins that are worth good money if they’re in mint condition, but there are only three that are worth money in average condition. Here’s a good way of telling if a coin is in “mint condition” or not – does it look like it was just made? If it looks even a little worn or dirty, it ain’t mint condition!

Not all round 50 cent coins are equal though.
